I’m really into Jason Isbell right now. I think everyone should be. For the time that he was with the Drive-By Truckers, he wrote (and sang) some of my favorite songs, such as “Outfit” and “The Day John Henry Died”– not to mention Decoration Day’s title song (which is probably the best on the album).
He went solo before this last album (and after him and the Trucker’s bassist Shonna Tucker’s marriage fell apart), but I only really got into him after him and his band The 400 Unit released their self-titled official first album. I haven’t stopped listening since.
True, none of the songs are quite up there with his best work with the Truckers, but he’s getting there. You can feel it; you can hear it. The band just needs to take time, get their bearings (and maybe some more permanent musicians…), but until then a few songs of the album make the weaker elements bearable.
There is no “Goddamn Lonely Love,” but there’s not quite an “Easy on Yourself” either (which is, without a doubt, a good thing), but what’s there is a start. And I will be seeing him (and Justin Townes Earle!) when they swing by Portland in April.

The quality on this video is a little bad, but whatever.

I got accepted into City Year Miami today.
Word.
Jack Daniels is hosting the Hold Steady in Portland on March 16th at the Crystal Ballroom for adults only! And the Mercury is giving away tickets! And I won two! And so did my friend! Woo! Free!!!!
Anyways, click that link to win yourself some free tickets if you live near Portland!
And:
EDIT:
Screw the Mercury. They are liars and inept.
FURTHER EDIT:
The Mercury is still whack, but Jack Daniels is less so (obv). So I got tickets! Yay! Hold Steady + Spring Break – gigantic thesis hell deadline = fuuunnn (at least for the night!)
As such:
Last year, for Lent I gave up:
soda
cookies
driving
I succeeded in all (although had I had access to a car, I would have failed hardcore. But luckily I was in Buenos Aires, and therefore, carless).
This year for Lent, I am surrending:
myspace
soda (after I finish this ginger ale… oops)
spending all my money on junk
While I’m not Catholic, it is the religion I have always most closely aligned myself with. Give it up for Catholic school! But mainly, I like the iconography. I’m a big fan of the Saints and the ceremony.
Tonight, I got whipped in the face by a tree (or, well, tree branch, I guess). Bastard tried to play it like that’s how I am every weekend except this time I was justified.

Below this, you will find (for the first time), my translation (at least the rough version) of the late Argentine poet Alejandra Pizarnik’s seminal work Árbol de Diana (or Diana’s Tree). For those out of the loop, this translation goes in conjunction with the undergraduate thesis I am currently knee deep in. While my first chapter (click here) aims to situate Pizarnik within her time while simultaneously revealing just how much of an oddball she was, the later chapters focus entierly on her 1962 poem Árbol de Diana. One of my main aims in writing this thesis was (is, I guess) to create the best English translation of this crucial poem. Unfortunately, Pizanrik has yet to be translated (well, actually she has been translated, they just have been hidden deep in academic texts or remain unpublished) for a wide English audience, and I am sorta striving to change this.
As such, here is the aforementioned *rough* translation I have so far (fyi, for the original Spanish, you can click here):
My adviser was surprised at how “good” this actually turned out. While it is rough, I’m proud, too.
Apparently one of my best friends smells like milk.
I feel guilty for my part in this girl’s pain.
I really do.
Even if it means we got our friend back, we stole her only love away from her.
I have A Very Special Entry for her (and myself, for that matter) planned, but for now:
Sugarland – “Stay”
Lisa Loeb – “Stay”
Off to work.
I HATE THAT ASSHOLE.
Caps ingnored, I hate him right now.
Fuck him
Fuck him hard.
[It might be for real this time].
I got a twitter.
I don’t really know why.
I ditched my first date.
To clean my bathroom.
But, that’s a secret.
(The first part, not the cleaning part).
My twitter: is here.
I wasn’t joking and/or exaggerating when I said “computer FAIL.” I’ve been officially banned from the Reed network until I do a complete system overhaul, for which, I’m currently waiting on the arrival of an XP disc. As such, I have to live in the library to get absolutely nothing accomplished. Which is whack.
Also, Grammy’s=FAIL.
Finally, should I spend next year living in Columbia, SC or Miami, FL? I really, really don’t know.
